Prof. Ruth Towse gives keynote lecture in Santiago at the invitation of the Chilean government |
Prof. Ruth Towse was invited by the Minister of Culture of Chile and the National Council for Culture and Arts of the Chilean Government to give the keynote lecture at the first seminar on Culture and Economy in Santiago on 3rd November.
The Minister of Economics was also present, signifying a joint interest in the contribution of culture to the economy. The seminar was attended by around 500 people.
Ruth was asked to speak on ‘How much is Culture worth? The contribution of the creative industries to the economy’, not her favourite topic but one that was exercising the National Council in view of its work on collecting national statistics on the creative industries.
Other participants, besides the ministers, included people from the film industries and, unusually, ‘angels’ – entrepreneurs who were financing cultural undertakings one way or another. More information on the First Seminary of Culture and Economy (Spanish).
