CIPPM 2009 Annual Lecture

Arnold image Performers' Rights
Delivered by the Hon Mr Justice Arnold

Thursday 26 March 2009, 6.30 - 8.00pm
Mary Wollstonecraft Lecture Theatre, Bournemouth House

The Centre for Intellectual Property Policy & Management is pleased to announce that Mr Justice Arnold, a leading expert on the rights of the performing artist, will be lecturing at Bournemouth University.

In 2008, Richard Arnold was appointed to the Office of High Court Judge (Patent Bench, Chancery Division) where he already has made a mark through his decision in Hotel Cipriani v Cipriani (2008). Notable earlier decisions include Linkin Park (2005, in his capacity as Appointed Person) and Spam/Spambuster (2005, as Deputy Judge) -- all relating to trade mark law.

Richard Arnold was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 1985 and became a QC in 2000. At the Bar he specialised in intellectual property law, entertainment and media law and information technology law. He was Chairman of the Code of Practice for the Promotion of Animal Medicines Committee from 2002 to 2008, an Appointed Person hearing trade mark appeals from 2003 to 2008 and a Deputy High Court Judge from 2004 to 2008. He was appointed to the High Court, Chancery Division in October 2008. He is the author of Performers' Rights (4th ed, Sweet & Maxwell, 2008), the editor of the Halsbury's Laws volume on trade marks (4th ed, Butterworths, 2007 reissue), was editor of Entertainment and Media Law Reports from 1993 to 2004 inclusive and has published numerous articles in legal journals.

During his time at the bar, Richard Arnold QC was nominated as IP Silk of the Year in Chambers & Partners Bar Awards 2007 and it has been said of him that he is "a man who pays 'inexhaustible attention to detail' … 'a good fighter who blows your socks off with his firm grasp of litigation strategy'", that "peers note that 'appearing against him is tough, as he is forthright and ferociously clever'" and that he is "a 'very bright, thorough and persistent advocate' who is also 'very affable'".

This is a not-to-be-missed opportunity for enquiring legal minds!

This event will provide one Law Society CPD point. Please state that this is required when making your booking.

Rights Agency seminar

Prior to Richard Arnold's Lecture, CIPPM is holding a seminar (26 March, 3-6pm) with Professor Ruth Towse and Professor Martin Kretschmer on the controversial Rights Agency (proposed in the government's Digital Britain interim report) . The Rights Agency is to encourage people to use legal sources of copyrighted material, and may administer a broadband fee to offset losses from piracy.

This seminar is by invitation only. If you wish to reserve a seat, please contact Emily Cieciura via email or call 01202 965197
