Master Class on the economics of copyright collecting societies

Date: 16 August 2010

Professor Ruth Towse Professor Ruth Towse review of the economic rationale for copyright law and collective management

Prof. Ruth Towse was invited in July 2010 by the SGAE (Sociedad General de Autores y Editores), the Spanish Authors’ Society, to give a Master Class on the ‘economics of copyright collecting societies’ to the combined collecting societies of Spain gathered under the umbrella organisation IBERCREA.

The presentation was commented on by Enrique Barón, former President of the European Parliament, and chaired by Professor D. Manuel Medina, Chairman of IBERCREA. This invitation followed on from the Economics of Copyright collecting societies report commissioned by SGAE and written by Christian Handke and Ruth Towse. This article was circulated to the collecting society community and published in International Review of Intellectual Property and Competition Law, Vol. 38, No.8, pp. 937-957, 2007 External Link.

Prof. Towse reviewed the economic rationale for copyright law and for collective management. She argues that an underlying issue in copyright law is attitudes to the collecting societies. The question of regulating collecting societies was also discussed; there had been controversy about the regulation of SGAE. Prof. Towse was interviewed by the Il Pubblico newspaper and an article published 6 July 2010.
