Tim Frain Tim Frain Director of IPR Regulatory Affairs, Nokia

This event has now concluded.

The Centre for Intellectual Property Policy & Management is pleased to announce that Tim Frain, a leading expert on intellectual property rights in technology and innovation, will give a public lecture at Bournemouth University.

Tim Frain is Director of IPR Regulatory Affairs at Nokia.  He is a British and European Patent Attorney, with 30 years experience of intellectual property in the corporate environment.  Tim has been at Nokia for over 20 years, where he helped establish the in-house patent department for the mobile phone business unit and has held a variety of senior IPR management roles.

Tim's current role focuses on policy matters around intellectual property and the changing legal and political environment.  Tim is recognised for his active contribution in the policy debate surrounding standardisation and patents.

Tim has a broad industry perspective, being actively involved in trade associations and professional organisations, especially in the UK and at EU level, and has close links to policy makers.  Tim was named as one of the top 50 most influential people in IP worldwide in the July/August 2008 issue of Managing Intellectual Property. He is often invited to speak at conferences and participate in debates about current topics on the IPR policy agenda.

Patent Remedies Seminar

Prior to Tim Frain’s lecture, CIPPM is hosting a seminar lead by Professor Paul Heald (University of Georgia). This event will take place at Bournemouth House (BG11), 16:00 - 17:30.

Professor Heald will review recent changes in the American remedial landscape (including the importation of grey market patented goods), provide a snapshot of international remedial obligations under TRIPS, and lay out a new economic model for optimal patent remedies.

Paul Heald joined the University of Georgia law faculty in 1989 and is the Allen Post Professor of Law. During the fall of 2008, he was a visiting professor of law at the University of Chicago. He also holds a visiting position at the Centre for Intellectual Property Policy and Management at Bournemouth University in England.

Heald lectures on patent, copyright and international intellectual property law around the world and has previously held visiting positions at universities in London, Lyon, Regensburg and Innsbruck, and at the University of Texas and Vanderbilt University. He will be teaching in the UGA/OSU program at St. Anne's College, Oxford University, in the spring of 2009.

Recent publications have focused on economic aspects of IP law, including theoretical papers on optimal patent remedies, the role transaction costs in patent law and the problem of patent pricing as well as two empirical studies on bestselling fiction and musical compositions from 1913-32.

No booking is required for either lecture or seminar but if you wish to reserve a seat, please email Emily Cieciura or call 01202 965197.
