TV Format Rights

Martin Kretschmer, Jon Wardle and Sukhpreet Singh have received funding from the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) for a business placement fellowship scheme. The title of the research is The Exploitation of TV Formats in Emerging Markets: Intellectual property and non-law strategies.

The research examines how TV Formats (one of the fastest growing programme types, and a major UK export) are exploited despite a lack of protection under intellectual property laws.

The study will include an interview based study of buyer and seller attitudes and behaviour at international media trade fairs, and a case study of three TV Formats developed by Fremantle Media (one of the major UK producers).

Sukhpreet Singh, CIPPM member and Associate Lecturer in Media Marketing, is the lead researcher on the project, which is also linked to his PhD work, constructing a database of all reported TV Format Rights disputes from 1987 to 2007.
