Symposium 2007
This year the focus of the first half-day was on the economics of copyright collecting societies.This is a political hot potato, as the EU is reviewing its policy on on-line services that cross borders, while right owners and intermediaries struggle with P2P technology and web 2.0 licenses. Chris Brady, Dean of the Business School welcomed delegates and invited Professor Ruth Towse, one of the leading cultural economists in Europe, who has recently been appointed to a chair at Bournemouth University, to deliver the key note address. Her paper - Regulating Copyright Collecting Societies (PDF - 63kb) - was discussed by a distinguished panel of commentators - Peter Jenner, Maria Frabboni and Friedemann Kawohl. The second half of the day showcased current research at CIPPM (PDF - 640kb). Anthony Murphy LVO, OBE, led the celebration of Professor Ruth Soetendorp’s 30 years at Bournemouth University, as she retires to an associate position. Prof. Jim Roach, who has worked with Ruth in expanding the integration of IP into engineering, gave a talk outlining the progress of this research (PDF - 326kb) .
